A barcode is a standardized code marked by a series of vertical black & white bars of diverse widths followed with a 12 or 13 digit numbers. A laser barcode scanner can recognize the data inside the bars and the digital code. Nearly everybody knows about the striped bars found on the various goods at a retail outlet.

The GS1 issues all EAN/UPC codes in blocks. Each block prefix has special meaning which often identifies the country of origin for the code. This doesn’t mean the product is manufactured in the specified country, only that the code itself belongs to that prefix.
